Davis Stampede Brings Sunshine to Downtown

DAVIS, CA – The 23rd Annual Davis Stampede was blessed with awesome weather, an enthusiastic crowd, and a new course that lived up to its expectations. Participants from as near as Davis and Sacramento, and as far away as Connecticut, flooded the downtown area Sunday morning for the unofficial kick-off to the annual Northern California running and walking season. Approximately 2,900 runners, walkers, and exercise enthusiasts made their way through the city streets and the University of California-Davis campus as part of the February tradition.

It was nothing but business for Darrin Rohr, of Reno, who covered the 13.1 miles of the Half Marathon course in a quick 1:13:53. Top Davis finishers in the Half Marathon included Dennis Prizmich (1:17:52) and C. Gustafson (1:19:32). In the women’s race, Sacramento’s Megan Canova took home the gold with a winning time of 1:25:29. Close behind was Davis’ own Kristine Shedd, 24, who finished second in 1:27:18.

Approximately one-third of the Davis Stampede entrants participated in the 10K race, which was a quick loop course along the Davis arboretum and central UC Davis campus. Winning the 10K men’s race was Vacaville’s 19 year-old Cheyne Inman, who won in 32:44. Inman’s finish was not only good enough for the win, but he also set the new Davis Stampede 10K race record, bettering the previous record from 1999 by 2 seconds. Alexandra Biglow, 31, won the women’s race in 39:31, holding off Lynn Keane of Gold River, who finished close behind in 39:39. Perhaps most notable in the 10K race was the race run by Lincoln’s 11-year old Nathan Padeck, who easily covered the 6.2 mile course in just 38:30, (an average 6:11/mile pace), setting what is expected to be a long-standing age-group record at the Davis Stampede.

Fifteen minutes and 46 seconds was all it took for Jeff Bruins of Lincoln to complete the 5K race. It was a good morning for the Bruins’ family; Jeff’s wife Stephanie finished 2nd in the women’s race in 18:34. The women’s 5K was won by Granite Bay’s Emmy Barr, who finished 35 seconds in front of Stephanie (17:59). Top Davis finishers in the men’s 5K race included Lars Schmitz (17:12) and Scott Halliday (17:51). Davis’ top female finisher in the 5K was Nita Thoreson, 32, who finished in 20:43.

This year’s event benefited several local non-profit groups, including UC Davis Men’s Rowing, Women’s Lacrosse and other Davis youth sports and philanthropy organizations. The event is made possible by local support, including Fleet Feet Sports-Davis, who was on-site at the race offering technical advice on running shoes as well as raffle prizes and games for all participants.
