A Change of Pace News Friday, June 11, 2004 In this Issue: - Focus on Kids: Obesity and exercise Kids Need Exercise, Healthy Food Choices One can hardly open up a newspaper or a newsmagazine today and not find an article or story dealing with 2004's hot topic: Childhood obesity. Recent studies have released data indicating America's children are eating unhealthy foods, exercising less, and that this is causing the raise in childhood obesity rates. A physician can point you in the direction of helpful ways to prevent or deal with these issues. In promoting the sports of running, walking and triathlon, A Change of Pace aims to provide events that will benefit runners, walkers and triathletes of all ages, from the time a child learns to walk. Some of our kid-oriented events this year include: · Davis Youth Baseball Camp (Sold Out!) (July 5-9, Ages 5-12) This month's featured event is our Davis Kid's Triathlon. After providing finish line timing services for the 550 kids who participated in the Silicon Valley Kid's Triathlon last Sunday (a great event!), we are more excited than ever to bring you the 3rd Annual Davis Kid's Triathlon on Sunday, August 15th . This year's triathlon will include several new features that will allow the event to be the biggest and best kid's triathlon on the West Coast, while keeping the event fun and achievable for all ages and abilities. Our number one goal remains the same: a safe and fun event that introduces the sport of triathlon to kids. New features include:
Triathlon Season is In Full Swing! The triathlon season is now in full swing here in Northern California and Nevada. With the Summer Olympics just 10 weeks away, professional triathletes are in final preparation for their race in Athens. Locally, hundreds of athletes are preparing for July's Donner Lake Triathlons , to be held on July 17-18th. Rated as the best triathlon in a mountain setting in California, the Donner Lake Triathlon offers a challenging course in the heart of the Sierras. Rather than complete a bike course that weaves through residential or commercial neighborhoods, the Donner Lake Triathlon bike course features views of the Truckee Valley and Donner Lake, a ride up to Donner Summit, pine forests and rock formations, and crisp, clean, mountain air. Coupled with a swim in the pristine waters of Donner Lake (avg. July temp is between 65 and 69 degrees F) and a beautiful run course along the lake, and you've found yourself one of the most scenic triathlons around. Still haven't registered? Plan to do so soon. The international distance is filling up fast and will probably reach capacity sometime this month. The sprint triathlon is filling quickly too. We hate to respond to emails and phone calls once the race is full with the disappointing news that the event is sold out, so don't delay. Since then, the road racing scene has been transformed. The event has introduced course entertainment such as Tamale Tunnel, Taco Turn and dancing avocados, post-race mariachi bands, a fresh Chevys lunch following the race, sombreros, and an organized event. This year's Chevys Fresh Mex Run will feature all this and more. Newly redesigned 5K and 12K courses (USATF certification is pending) will feature course incentives and entertainment. A new starting area at Discovery Park will ease pre and post-race parking issues and shuttles. The Chevys kitchen is working to provide you with a fresh and tasty plate of Chevys' renowned fajitas. And our vendor expo will have everything from running shoes to face painting to the latest sports beverages. This is a running/walking event you can't find anywhere except in Sacramento. Don't miss it! Registration and race information is available on our website. Visit http://www.changeofpace.com/2004_chevys_fresh_mex_run.html to read more. See you on September 18th!
