California Kids Triathlon to Benefit UC Davis Children’s Hospital DAVIS, CA – The last splash of the summer is taking place this weekend at UC Davis: The California Kids Triathlon will be held this Sunday morning, August 13th at UC Davis’ Schaal Aquatic Center. The first wave begins at 8:00 a.m. The triathlon is designed for children ages 4 to 17. Held in the traditional triathlon format, athletes will participate in three consecutive sports in the following order – swimming, biking and running. The event was created with the child in mind; three identifiable sports with achievable distances. The emphasis of this event is placed on more on completion than competition. This year, Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante will address the crowd on stage in regard to the importance of physical activity in children. The California Kids Triathlon serves as an educational platform to stress the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle to both parents and children. In 2007, the Positive Energy Tour, a campaign created by A Change of Pace, organizers of the California Kids Triathlon, will strive to get kids “energized” about exercise through outdoor activities. The focus of the program is to promote youth participation, promote healthy development in children and to increase access to achievable participatory events. Through the tour, both the kids and parents will have a greater understanding of how important exercise and a healthy lifestyle will play in their future. The inaugural Davis Kids Triathlon was held in June 2002 with great success. The event has grown to be the largest kid’s triathlon in the United States. 1,200 kids are anticipated to participate this Sunday. The California Kids Triathlon will benefit UC Davis Children’s Hospital. The California Kids Triathlon will be held at the Schaal Aquatic Center on the UC Davis Campus. The swim portion will be held in the pool; the bike and run courses will take place on the bike paths on campus. Swim, bike and run distances are specific to each two-year age group. Upon reaching the finish line, all participants will be greeted by a cheering crowd; a finisher’s medal, food and both interactive and inflatable fun activities. Participation in this event includes an official t-shirt, water bottle, custom finisher’s medal, post race refreshments, huge kids interactive area, and a goody bag. Registration for the Davis Kids Triathlon is still available at Fleet Feet-Davis, however, the event is nearing maximum capacity. Entry fees are $45 per child through Saturday, August 12th. A $5 sibling discount is available to families with two or more children participating. On race morning, the oldest age division (15-17 years) will start first at 8:00 a.m., followed by the younger divisions: 13-14 years; 11-12 years; 9-10 years; 7-8 years and lastly 4-6 years. All waves will be completed before Noon. All information pertaining to the event is available online at www.changeofpace.com.
